Back to Education Part 2
I have talked about a variety of issues concerning education and I recently heard an interview that made me want to return to this topic. In the September issue of Harper’s Magazine, Mark Slouka wrote an article entitled “Dehumanized-When Math and Science Rule the School.” (Please visit your local library to read the full article.) Slouka’s article focuses on the rise of math and science in all levels of education today, and the question of value but he also makes an impassioned statement of why the arts and humanities are, perhaps, of even more importance. He notes, “what is taught, at any given time, in any culture, is an expression of what that culture considers important.” more »
