No End in Sight

I have no faith in the government to fix the either the health care system or contain insurance premiums.  The downside to this is that I know the industry itself will not do anything that is against their best interest—namely, control costs.  We saw how competently the government handled the prescription drug legislation the last time around: they handed it over to the industry and let them write the bill so they got the best end and the American public got the short end of the stick.  So, what are we left with?  There are a lot of people out there saying a lot of things, but there aren’t that many of them that are actually true. more »

Back to Education Part 1

I have addressed education (or the lack of it) here a number of times, and I thought that I was done with it, but two things came up this week that demand a return.  The first is about President Obama’s speech to children in school next week.  When Bush the Elder gave a similar speech when he was in office there were a few democrats who made some noise about it.  Let’s face it, no matter who is in office, there is a small percentage that will be against whatever he would do.  And I am fine with that.  If you don’t have a mind big enough to consider things that fall outside of your comfort zone, then that is on you. more »

The End of Summer

The end of Summer is here!  I am not saying that because of the Labor Day Weekend which is upon us, but because, here in Charleston we have noticed a tremendous change in the weather.  The summers here are the one thing I can’t stand about living in Charleston:  the heat is abysmal, the humidity painful, and the fact that I am getting older and a little rounder isn’t helping anything.  Having lived in Panama for two years, I can say without a doubt that the summers here are worse than they are in Central America.  more »
