Branding, Identity and Solitude
By whom are you branded? It is a very interesting word—brand. When I was a child, watching westerns and spending time on the farm in Kansas, it was what differentiated ownership of an animal. But today it has been appropriated by the corporate world, or perhaps by their marketers, to demonstrate how they define themselves, how a company presents themselves to the public through both their name and logo. Liberty and Society
I am going to make a blanket generalization right off the bat. Those who are in power seek to stay in power. Many times, in addition, they also seek to use that power to keep others in a position of weakness. What got me thinking about this was a discussion of the separation of church and state. It is the case that nowhere in the First Amendment does there say that there shall be a separation between church and state; rather, that “congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” more »

Oh, To Live in a Swing State -or- Boy, I wish my vote counted!
There is a great debate amongst pundits about the number of battleground or swing states in play this election, more than at any other time in recent history. Due to the make-up of the electorate, and partisans being who they are, it is up to that most rare of animals—independent voters—who will determine how many of these states swing in the election. I am one of those sought after independent voters, also known as moderates. Since the first election I voted in, in 1980, I have voted for Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, the Green Party, I even voted for Ross Perot. more »
